Zone 12 NYSSMA Spring Festivals are listed by borough here.

MEANYC All-County Festivals invite participation from schools in all five boroughs. The festivals are two day events with students rehearsing preselected music on Friday evenings and Saturday morning and culminating in a Saturday afternoon concert. The Middle School Festival is open to all MEANYC members, takes place early in February and includes a chorus, a band and a string ensemble. The High School Festival is a co-sponsored with the NYCDOE and as such is open to all city schools as well as private and parochial schools with a NYSSMA membership. This festival is scheduled at the beginning of March and along with a chorus, band and string ensemble, there is also a jazz band. With the organization of these festivals, MEANYC sought to provide opportunities for students to learn and to perform pieces that are one or two levels of difficulty higher than would likely be possible in their home schools and to receive coaching from an alternate conductor.

NYSSMA Adjudication Festivals are events for member schools with the purpose of providing detailed feedback regarding an instrumental or vocal solo or an ensemble performance from certified judges in each area of music. Each student or music group receives a performance time slot for their review at some point during a two or three day event.  (All city schools are eligible to participate since the Department of Education of the City of New York insures that all schools are registered with NYSSMA.) The calendar of dates for each festival is issued by NYSSMA and is typically published in School Music News and on the NYSSMA website. The dates take place at various times throughout the spring with a festival site in each borough.

2014 New York City Wide Honors High School Music Festival
Grand Street Campus High School
March 7 and 8, 2014

On Saturday, March 8th I had the opportunity to witness magic. The spell was cast at Grand Street Education Campus where the Honors Music Festival for High School Students was happening. All five boroughs were represented as students from twenty two schools met on Friday after school to play together, many for the first time. After rehearsing Friday night they once again arrived early on Saturday morning to continue their preparation. This preparation paid off big as that afternoon they mesmerized the audience with the wonders that only music can bring.

The performance was visited by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and he provided his thoughts on Music and the Arts.  Mr. Adams said, "We consume food to nourish our physical anatomy but I think Music and the Arts nourishes out spiritual anatomy."

This event treated all who attended the performance music from four ensembles under the direction of renowned Music Educators and Performers.

Orchestra - Dr. Susan A. Davis, Conductor
Chorus - Jana Ballard, Conductor
Concert Band - Dr. Raymond Wheeler, Conductor
Jazz Band - Dr. Thomas Zlabinger, Conductor

I can't praise the students and educators enough as the music touched my very soul.  These talented individuals sounded like they had been playing and singing these pieces together for years not for less than two days.  All I can say to them is thank you for making my day special.
