Session I - Strategies for Recruiting Students into the Choral Classroom
In this interactive workshop, we will explore innovative ways to recruit students into the
chorus classroom. We will also discuss various engaging activities to implement into
your teaching that will motivate and inspire your students to continue their participation
in the chorus/music classroom.

Session II -Choral Reading Session
Participants will have the opportunity to start their school year off right with new
materials! We will spend time sight-reading through repertoire to help you plan your
future performances.

Sara Shikowitz is a proud music educator working in the New York City
Department of Education. She serves as the choral director at Halsey Junior
High School 157 in Rego Park, Queens. She teaches the grade six chorus,
grade seven and eight chorus, select chorus, show choir, and intergenerational
choir. The choral program includes over 300 students. Her select chorus has
received a “gold with distinction” rating at NYSSMA for three years in a row,
and was selected to perform in the Queens Borough Arts Festival. Ms.
Shikowitz is also the music director for the spring musicals. In addition to
working at Halsey, Ms. Shikowitz is a NYSSMA adjudicator for both solo and
major performances, and a consultant for off-broadway children’s musicals.
Ms. Shikowitz taught as an adjunct professor of music education at Queens
College, and conducted the Middle School All-County Festival for SCMEA.
Sara received her Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Ithaca College
and received her Master's Degree in Music Education from Queens College

This workshop satisfies 4 hours of CTLE Credit (forms available at Workshop)

Payment and Cost: Workshop is $15.00 with advance online registration (PayPal) at $20.00 at the door if you prefer to pay cash or credit card. Advance registration entitles you to pay $15.00 at the door. Walk-ins pay $20.00. MEANYC members get one free workshop. No fee for college students.
