Why Become a MEANYC Member?
Are you a NYC Music Educator? If you are, and you have not yet joined MEANYC, then join today! MEANYC is the Music Educators Association of NYC, the county chapter of NYSSMA – the New York State School Music Association.
MEANYC was formed in 1989 by dedicated teachers and administrators as a vehicle to keep music alive in the five boroughs of New York City. Today our membership includes NYC music educators both active and retired, from kindergarten through college level from public and private schools, music education students from our local colleges, and many others who actively support music in the NYC public schools. A vast reservoir of experience and expertise exists within our membership. We are continually working to promote and improve music education in New York City and we have been involved in many initiatives on both the local and state levels to achieve this goal.
Our executive board meets monthly to discuss the needs of our students, schools and members. Our newsletter Crescendo is published three times a year. It contains NYSSMA updates, spotlights on schools and members, as well as information about various events and programs throughout NYC.
Networking is an important aspect of MEANYC. All members are encouraged to attend events and link with other NYC educators and arts organizations sharing ideas, information and news about what’s happening in NYC schools. Did you know that the Music Blueprint is available on the OASP website? Are you aware of the ArtsCount guide for principals? Do you know what the latest developments are?
Ongoing professional development is important for music educators. We continue our series of excellent, relevant, supportive, informative professional development workshops in conjunction with the UFT Music Teachers Committee. Members attending receive PD credit, and our workshops are free of charge to college students.
In addition, MEANYC provides advocacy for music teachers. MEANYC has been involved in important arts legislation and continues to lobby for music education in NYC, Albany, and on the national level to keep you informed.
So — JOIN TODAY — and join us in our pursuit for quality music education for all NYC students!
You can also download a MEANYC Membership Application and mail to Patti Peltz, Membership Chair.
