The NYC High School Honors Music Festival planning committee is pleased to announce the 7th annual NYC High School Music Honors Festival, to be held once again at the Grand Street Campus High Schools (850 Grand Street, Brooklyn, NY - L to Grand Street) on Friday, March 29th and Saturday, March 30th. This festival will consist of an Honors String Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Chorus and Jazz Ensemble comprising students representing the best of as many NYC Public, Private and Charter schools as possible. The Festival will consist of rehearsals Friday March 30th from 4pm to 9pm and Saturday March 30th from 9am to 2pm with a culminating concert at 230pm. Directors nominating students are expected to attend the festival with students both Friday and Saturday.
This year's distinguished guest conductors are quite possibly the most impressive list yet - Travis Cross (Director of Bands, UCLA) for the Symphonic Band, Shareef Clayton for the Jazz Band, David Fryling (Director of Choral Activities, Hofstra) for the Chorus, and Ian Shafer (Manhattan School of Music) for the Orchestra.
Music Teachers are encouraged to nominate their best and most reliable students for the festival. Directors are responsible for distributing, collecting and submitting permission slips for accepted students as well as notifying festival chair ASAP of any students who have to withdraw from the festival.
Directors are also responsible for printing and distributing music as per part assignments and making sure students prepare their music before the festival. Directors will be sent pdf's of all documents and music.
Please understand that not all nominated students can be accepted, but as many as possible will be. We seek representation from all participating programs. Our goal is to completely avoid having no shows the day of the festival. Music Teachers will also be asked some basic questions about each nominated student that help us to create properly balanced ensembles and pick appropriate music. Music teachers are asked to give each nominated student a rank per ensemble. For example, if you are nominating 10 students for the choir, rank them 1 (best) to 10 (worst) in the grounds of ability and reliability.
